The Rivelin Valley lies approximately five miles west of Sheffield City Centre. The valley is three and a half miles long and follows the course of the River Rivelin, a fast flowing river that drains the moorland peat. Although most of the mills and wheels have now disappeared, the ponds that were created to feed them are still present throughout the valley. Some have been restored by Yorkshire Wildlife and the Ponds Conservation Trust. Another ancient and historic feature, is Matty Well, which lies just opposite Blackberry Cottage and Rowan Cottage on Tofts Lane. The Mayfield valley where Workhouse Cottage is situated forms a segment of Sheffield's Golden Frame, five miles to the west of the city centre with the river Porter running through it. Another ancient and historic feature, is Matty Well, which lies just opposite Blackberry Cottage on Tofts Lane. Whilst enjoying all the rural tranquility of both valleys one can benefit from the convenience of easy access to Sheffield Centre, only 15 minutes away by car or frequent reliable public transport.
The Peak District National Park boundary is less than half a mile away from Sheffield Holiday Cottage, gateway to star attractions such Chatsworth House and Gardens, the beautiful Hope Valley, and the spa and market towns of Buxton and Bakewell. There are endless opportunities for outdoor activities in the beautiful countryside here.

Workhouse Cottage nestles in a quiet rural location within the Mayfield Valley, on the Western edge of Sheffield. The cottage dates from the early 1700's and is said to have housed people who worked in the workhouse at that time. At the bottom of the South facing garden runs the gurgling Porter Brook, as it descends from Burbage Moor.
A pleasant stroll along good paths, in a downstream direction, passes a handful of old mill dams, Forge Dam is a great spot to feed the ducks, visit the cosy cafe, or let the children play in the play area. Continuing along the path joins Endcliffe Park, with cafe and play area, before ending at the Ecclesall Road shopping area. Heading in a more upstream direction takes one directly to the beautiful Peak District National Park.
